Understanding Functional Medicine

In recent years, more people have started looking beyond quick fixes and one-size-fits-all healthcare solutions. That search has led many to discover functional medicine — an approach focused on identifying and addressing the root causes of illness rather than simply treating symptoms.
But what exactly is functional medicine, and how does it differ from traditional medicine? Functional medicine is a personalized, science-based approach to healthcare that examines how lifestyle, genetics, environment, and nutrition influence overall health. Instead of asking only, “What disease does this person have?” practitioners also ask, “Why is this happening in the first place?”
For example, someone experiencing chronic fatigue may receive medication to manage symptoms in a conventional setting. In functional medicine, the practitioner would likely explore a much broader picture: sleep quality, stress levels, nutrient deficiencies, gut health, hormone balance, inflammation, and daily habits. The goal is to uncover the underlying imbalances contributing to the fatigue.
One of the defining features of functional medicine is its emphasis on prevention and long-term wellness. Practitioners work closely with patients to create individualized treatment plans that may include dietary changes, exercise, stress management, supplements, and lifestyle modifications. This collaborative relationship encourages patients to take an active role in their health journey.
Functional medicine also recognizes that the body’s systems are deeply interconnected. Digestive issues, for instance, may affect mental health, immune function, and energy levels. Rather than viewing symptoms in isolation, practitioners look at how different systems interact and influence one another.
Nutrition plays a major role in many functional medicine plans. Food is often viewed not just as fuel, but as a powerful tool for healing and prevention. Patients may be encouraged to reduce inflammatory foods, improve gut health, or adopt eating habits that better support their individual needs.
While functional medicine continues to grow in popularity, it is important to note that it is not intended to replace emergency care or conventional medicine. Instead, many people use it alongside traditional healthcare to create a more comprehensive approach to wellness.
Ultimately, functional medicine aims to shift healthcare from reactive treatment to proactive healing. By focusing on the whole person — not just isolated symptoms — it offers a more personalized path toward better health and long-term well-being.
Dr. Meri offers functional medicine services through Integrative Telehealth NP. This allows her to collaborate with a team of functional medicine and primary care experts making sure that patients receive the best possible care. Also included in the functional medicine services, you will have access to primary care medicine for no additional charge.
What does functional medicine entail for the patient? We will start with taking a detailed history and then you will be prescribed testing based on your history and symptoms. The testing can range from basic to advanced and can be done through blood, urine, saliva, stool or hair samples. The tests will help us diagnose the root cause of the issue and come up with a treatment plan to correct the dysfunction. At Integrative Telehealth NP, we only prescribe the most necessary tests for your conditions. We are very financially responsible and will always start with the minimum amount of testing and add on additional only if warranted. With the exception of only two very detailed and advanced tests, we offer all testing at discounted rates and do not make a profit from the testing.
How much does it cost? The cost is $159 / month for one person. This includes unlimited visits (for both primary and functional medicine), direct provider access and discounted labs when needed. If you want to add on other family members, it is very affordable. For two family members, the cost is $179 / month and for 3-4 family members, the cost is $199 / month.
